The Tom Dick and Harry Mountain Trail will give you one of the best views of Mt Hood. You will also get to hike past Mirror Lake on the way to the top.
The Mirror Lake portion of the hike is relatively easy. It ends at a beautiful lake where you can see a reflection of the mountain on a clear day. You can read about that hike here.
Once you get to Mirror Lake, there are some very clear signs that will tell you how to continue up the Tom Dick and Harry Mountain trail. It’s a pretty tough hike up to the top because you gain elevation quickly and it’s straight uphill for most of it. My Apple Watch said we gained 1,400 feet from Mirror Lake to the peak of the Mountain.
We went when it was 85+ degrees and let me tell you from experience, if you don’t hydrate the day before, you are going to struggle. If you are planning to go during the summer months, be sure to pack plenty of water.
I also always take Nuun tablets on big hikes like this for an extra electrolyte boost.
For most of the uphill part, the trail is pretty narrow and steep. Once you get about a mile from the top, you can rest a little while walking on flat-ish ground.
You will see a giant pile of rocks right at the beginning of the flatter part. Continue on the trail to the left of the rocks.
After walking along flat ground for a little bit, you will come to your last, rocky ascent to the top. Once you see the view, you will feel like the hike was completely worth it. It’s really incredible.
From the top of Tom Dick and Harry Mountain we had a great view of Mt Hood, but it was a bit hazy because of some summer fires.
Once you reach the top of the Mountain trail, it’s pretty flat and makes for a great photo (and snack) opportunity. Tag us in your Instagram photos with #discovermthood
When you’re done taking in the views, head back the way you came to get to your car. We stopped again at Mirror Lake on the way down because it was hot and we needed a break.
From start to finish, the hike (including the Mirror Lake section) was about 9 miles. It’s such a great way to get intense exercise and enjoy an incredible view of Mt Hood.
