Owl Point

By Kelsey Samsel | Hiking

If you want a unique view of Mt. Hood, head to Owl Point in the Mt. Hood National Forest. For a long time, the trail was an open secret that people weren’t technically allowed to hike. The path had been overgrown for decades until a group of hikers took the time to clear it, much to the Forest Service’s dismay. The hikers worked for several years to get the trail officially recognized and now it’s a citizen-maintained trail.

To get to this trail, start at the Vista Ridge Trailhead, hike for 1/3 mile to Vista Ridge Junction and then turn left onto Vista Ridge Trail #626A. When you reach Owl Point, the view of Mt. Hood is stunning. It’s amazing that you can get such a great view without having to hike more than 4 miles round-trip.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • This trail is about 4 miles round-trip
  • You will need a $5 Northwest Forest Day Pass for this trail
  • Dogs are allowed on a leash
  • The road to Vista Ridge Trailhead is pretty bumpy and rough
