Mushroom Hunting on Mt. Hood

By Kelsey Samsel | Things To Do

Fall is the perfect time for mushroom hunting on Mt. Hood because the ground is getting soggy and that creates a perfect environment for them to grow.

permits for mushroom hunting

If you are going to hunt mushrooms in the Mt. Hood region, you have to pick up a free permit before you go. These are available at Zigzag Ranger Station along with maps that show where you can and cannot pick.

The free permit allows you to pick up to 1 gallon of mushrooms and then from there, you have to pay per gallon depending on what kind you pick. Click here to read more about these specific permits.

safe vs. poisonous mushrooms

If you are unfamiliar with the differences between safe and poisonous mushrooms, get a detailed guidebook before you go – like this pocket-sized book from Amazon.

You can find mushrooms all over the Pacific Northwest. Many people keep their hunting locations secret so they don’t get overrun but we suggest starting with the maps the Zigzag Ranger Station provides.
