I always drive past Zigzag Mountain Cafe on my way to Mt. Hood and wonder if it’s good. My dad and I stopped at Zigzag for sandwiches when I was a kid but I haven’t been back since. I have always remembered thinking the sandwiches were amazing.
Zigzag is open until 2pm Monday-Friday, (6pm Saturday & Sunday). I usually can’t make it in time but I recently did a sunrise hike at Timberline Lodge so it was perfect timing.
The parking lot is small and you might accidentally drive past it if you aren’t paying attention but it’s definitely worth stopping. The restaurant is bigger than you might expect and can accommodate larger groups if needed.
It’s a very casual eatery and the waiter was soft-spoken but kind to us. They have an extensive menu with breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and dessert but we were in the mood for breakfast since we had just hiked about 6 miles and it was only 11:30am.
My friend ordered the Eggs Benedict with a pancake on the side. She also added a side of house-made preserves for the pancake. I didn’t taste her breakfast because I am gluten-free but she said everything was delicious.
I ordered the Mt. Hood Scramble and it was perfectly cooked. The veggies weren’t overdone and there was just the right amount of Creme Fraiche on top. Our food was cooked in a timely manner and everything was exactly how we wanted it.
Whether you’re heading to Mt. Hood for a day trip or staying at Whispering Woods Resort, I would definitely recommend adding Zigzag Mountain Cafe to your list of local restaurant options. For more restaurant suggestions and food inspiration, visit our Eat+Drink page.
