Vista House Viewpoint

One of the best views of the Columbia River Gorge can be seen from Vista House. This historic site celebrated 100 years of existence in May of 2018 and is a must-see if you are driving through The Gorge.

Samuel Lancaster came up with the idea to build Vista House as a way to inspire travelers driving on the highway. It was the perfect place for “an observatory from which the view both up and down the Columbia could be viewed in silent communion with the infinite”.

The building’s exterior is sandstone, the roof is covered in matte-glazed green tiles, and floors and stairs were made from Tokeen Alaskan Marble. The inside of the dome was painted to look like marble and bronze.

If you want to learn more during your visit, ask one of the volunteers about the history and architecture of the building. They can also answer questions and give you information about the Columbia Gorge region.

Take the stairs up the to the balcony for an incredible view of the Columbia River Gorge. Plus, you can get a closer look at the top of the building. There’s also a coffee shop and gift shop in the lower level of the building

*Vista House is wheelchair accessible*

This landmark is maintained by Friends of Vista House, in partnership with Oregon State Parks. Their mission is to help preserve and protect the historic Vista House and to provide information and interpretive programs about it’s history and the Columbia River Gorge

Vista House is definitely worth visiting even if the weather is foggy. The architecture is stunning and the stained glass is lovely. If the weather is clear, you will be able to see miles upon miles of The Columbia River Gorge.

Check out this post for more trip ideas if you are driving the Mt. Hood Scenic Loop.
